Fitness Disclaimer & Assumption of Risk

By downloading, installing, opening, or using Chalk, you are deemed to have read, acknowledged, and accepted this disclaimer in full. No tap, signature, or other acknowledgment is required. Your use of the app is itself your acceptance of these terms, and your continued use is your continued acceptance of them as they may be updated from time to time. If you do not agree to any part of this disclaimer, do not use the app.

Chalk is a logbook, not a coach. It records the exercises, weights, and repetitions that you choose and enter. It does not create training programs, prescribe weights, tell you what to lift, or assess whether any exercise, load, or rep count is appropriate or safe for you. It has no ability to evaluate your health, fitness level, form, technique, injury history, or physical condition.

About the numbers Chalk shows you. Estimated one-rep max, total volume, progress charts, personal records, and any similar figure are arithmetic performed on data you entered yourself. They are estimates for your own reference only. They are not recommendations, targets, goals, or advice, and nothing in the app should be read as suggesting you attempt any particular weight. An estimated one-rep max in particular is a mathematical projection, not a statement that you can or should lift that weight.

No medical advice. Chalk is not a medical device and does not provide medical, health, nutritional, or professional training advice. Nothing in the app is a substitute for advice from your physician or a qualified fitness professional. Never disregard or delay seeking professional medical advice because of something you saw in this app.

Assumption of risk and limitation of liability. You voluntarily assume all risk arising from your use of Chalk and from any physical activity you undertake while using it. To the fullest extent permitted by law, Chalk, its developer, and each of their respective affiliates are not liable for any injury, harm, loss, or damage of any kind arising out of or connected to your use of the app, including any injury sustained while exercising. Chalk is provided "as is," without warranty of any kind.

Nothing in this disclaimer limits any right you have that cannot be waived or limited under the law where you live. Your use of the app is also governed by Apple's Standard End User License Agreement.

Privacy Policy

The short version

1. Who We Are

Chalk ("we," "our," or "us") is a workout tracking app built and operated by Alex Gage. If you have any questions about this Privacy Policy, you can reach us at alexsgage@gmail.com.

This Privacy Policy applies to the Chalk iOS app, the Chalk web app (PWA), and any related services (collectively, the "App").

2. Data We Collect

What we collect depends entirely on whether you sign in. Chalk is local-first and works fully without an account. Signing in is optional, and it is the only thing that causes any workout data to leave your device.

If you do not sign in

Nothing leaves your device, and we hold no data about you at all. Your workout logs, exercise history, personal records, splits, templates, and settings are stored only on your device, in your browser's or the app's local storage. This is how Chalk behaves by default and how it behaves for every user of the web app.

If you sign in (optional, iOS app only)

The iOS app offers Sign in with Apple so your workouts can sync between your devices and survive a lost, broken, or replaced phone. You are never required to sign in, and the app is fully functional if you do not. When you do sign in, we store the following on our behalf:

That is the complete list. We do not receive your name from Apple, and we do not ask for it.

We may also receive:

What we never collect, signed in or not:

3. How We Use Your Data

Every use below is what it takes to run the feature you asked for. Nothing more:

We do not use your data for advertising, marketing, profiling, or any purpose other than making the app work for you.

4. Subscriptions and Payments

Chalk is free to use for 14 days. No account, payment method, or subscription is required during that period. After the 14 days, continuing to use the app requires a Chalk Pro subscription, billed monthly or annually. All subscription transactions (including payment processing, billing, and renewals) are handled entirely by Apple through the App Store.

We never receive, store, or process your credit card number, Apple ID, or any payment information. Apple's privacy policy governs the handling of your payment data. You can review it at apple.com/legal/privacy.

Subscriptions are validated and managed directly through Apple's In-App Purchase system (StoreKit). We do not use any third-party subscription processor. Your purchase and entitlement status are handled by Apple; we never receive your payment information.

Refunds and Cancellation: Apple allows you to request a refund for subscriptions within 14 days of your purchase date. If you subscribe to Chalk Pro and want to cancel:

To manage or cancel your subscription at any time, go to iPhone Settings → Your Name → Subscriptions, select Chalk, and choose "Cancel Subscription." You can also request a refund directly from Apple through the App Store.

5. Data Sharing and Disclosure

We do not sell your personal information. We do not share your personal information with third parties for marketing purposes.

Service providers. If you sign in, two companies necessarily handle your data on our behalf. They process it only to provide the service to us and are not permitted to use it for their own purposes:

If you never sign in, neither of the above applies, because there is nothing to store.

The only other circumstances under which we might disclose information are:

We do not use third-party advertising networks, analytics platforms (such as Google Analytics, Firebase, or Mixpanel), or tracking SDKs of any kind.

6. Push Notifications

If you grant permission, Chalk may send local push notifications, for example to alert you when a rest timer has ended. These notifications are generated and delivered entirely on your device. They are not sent through our servers and do not involve any personal data leaving your device.

You can disable push notifications at any time in iPhone Settings → Chalk → Notifications.

7. Data Export and Deletion

You are always in control of your data.

If you have never signed in, there is nothing for us to delete, because we hold nothing. Uninstalling the app removes your data entirely.

Retention. If you sign in, we keep your synced workouts for as long as your account exists, because their whole purpose is to still be there when you get a new phone. We do not impose a separate expiry on them. When you delete your account they are deleted along with it. If you would rather ask us to do it, email alexsgage@gmail.com and we will action it, though the in-app button is immediate.

8. Children's Privacy

Chalk is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we become aware that a child under 13 has provided personal information, we will delete it promptly.

If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal information, please contact us at alexsgage@gmail.com.

9. Data Security

Your data is stored on your device using your device's native storage mechanisms, which are protected by your device's built-in security (including Face ID, Touch ID, and device encryption).

If you sign in, your synced workouts are additionally protected by:

If you never sign in, none of your workout data crosses the internet at all, and the primary security layer is your device itself.

No method of electronic storage or transmission is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

If you contact us by email, we take reasonable precautions to protect that communication, though no method of electronic transmission is 100% secure.

10. Your Privacy Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have specific rights regarding your personal data. Because we collect so little, most of these rights are satisfied by features already in the app:

California residents (CCPA): California law grants additional rights including the right to know what personal information we collect and to opt out of its sale. We do not sell personal information. For any California privacy requests, contact us at alexsgage@gmail.com.

EEA, UK, and Swiss residents (GDPR): If you are located in the European Economic Area, United Kingdom, or Switzerland, you have additional rights under the General Data Protection Regulation. Where you have signed in, our legal basis for storing your account and synced workouts is the performance of a contract: you asked for sync, and holding that data is what delivers it. Withdrawing is always available by signing out or deleting your account. Signing in also means your data is transferred to and stored in the United States, as described in section 5. You have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

11. Third-Party Services

Chalk integrates with the following third-party services, each with their own privacy policies:

We do not integrate with Google, Facebook, advertising networks, or any other third-party data platforms.

12. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time as the app grows and new features are added. If we make material changes (for example, if we ever store a new category of data, or add a new service provider), we will update this page and revise the "Last updated" date at the top.

We encourage you to review this page periodically. Continued use of Chalk after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.

13. Contact Us
